Worried about spending your whole surf trip just getting to the waves? I've been there. Itacaré solves that problem by packing incredible surf breaks right on its doorstep, so you spend less time trekking and more time surfing.
Why Itacaré, Bahia?
Itacaré is a gem on Brazil's "Cocoa Coast," a concentrated haven for surfers. With at least 4 main urban beaches and numerous others accessible by trail, it delivers consistency and variety within a small, easily navigated area. It's where the Atlantic Rainforest meets the ocean, creating a stunning backdrop for your sessions.
→ Itacaré thrives on east and southeast swells, which are most common from April to September.
↳ This swell direction lights up the local beach breaks, creating punchy, fun peaks.
Getting There & Getting Around
The main gateway to Itacaré is Ilhéus Jorge Amado Airport (IOS). From there, it's a scenic drive north along the coast to reach the town.
Once you're in Itacaré, you can walk to most of the town's main breaks. For spots further out like Jeribucaçu, hiring a local guide with a 4x4 or taking a taxi is your best bet.
→ Fly into Ilhéus Airport (IOS), which is about 44 miles (70 kilometers) south of Itacaré.
↳ A taxi or pre-booked transfer takes about 90 minutes and costs around $55 USD / 300 BRL. You can also take the public bus, which is cheaper but takes longer.
When to Surf
The prime surf season is during the Southern Hemisphere winter, from April through September. This period sees consistent swells that produce waves averaging 3-5 feet. Water temperature is pleasant year-round, typically sitting at a comfortable 79°F (26°C). Most breaks work well on a mid-tide pushing to high.

Engenhoca Beach: A 15-minute hike through the rainforest leads you to this beautiful, more secluded beach. The wave is a slower, more forgiving beach break, perfect for honing your skills.

Prainha: Often called one of Brazil's most beautiful beaches, reaching it requires a 40-minute hike. It's a classic A-frame beach break that can get hollow with the right swell.
